<[link removed]>,"

private-sector markets.

Mental Health ED Visits

In this month's issue, K. John McConnell and colleagues use newly
available national Medicaid claims data from 2018 to examine emergency
department (ED) visits for mental health conditions among Medicaid
beneficiaries
<[link removed]>.

They find substantial state-to-state variation "both in ED visits for
mental health conditions and in outpatient mental health visits, with
these measures positively correlated."

Visit rates in the region with the highest rates are eight times higher
than those in the region with the lowest rates, McConnell and colleagues
report.

The authors also find little correlation between ED visits for anxiety
and those for schizophrenia or between ED visits for depression and
those for suicide, leading them to suggest that a "one-size-fits-all"
approach to mental health may be less effective than programs tailored
to the local population's needs.
