The lesson from East Palestine, Ohio is clear: the failure to properly regulate rail companies had disastrous consequences on the lives of Americans and the environment.
That’s why Representative Chris Deluzio and I have introduced the DERAIL Act, legislation that would broaden the definition of a “high-hazard flammable train” to enforce higher safety standards on our nation’s railways.

The rail industry has fought to keep lax regulations that put workers and communities at risk of toxic exposure and long-term ecological damage. Norfolk Southern, the company which owned the train that derailed in East Palestine, was found just three months ago lobbying to resist legislation requiring trains to have at least two crew members to address emergencies.
Companies like Norfolk Southern have been allowed to cut corners to rake in profits, and we’re witnessing the results. Congress has a responsibility to protect Americans feeling abandoned and invisible in the wake of this harm and hold these companies accountable by strengthening our nation’s rail safety standards.
