Dear Friend, I’m back in Washington this week and I can’t believe it’s the same temperature as San Diego! It was so nice being home and spending time with kids and child care providers, celebrating federal funding that I secured for USD, and joining Rolando’s Community Council meeting to share an update about the Rolando post office! This past weekend, our community also joined the House of Ukraine in Balboa Park to recognize the one-year anniversary of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine – and to stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

I’m so proud to represent a community that fiercely defends democracy and willingly opens its homes to asylum seekers, including those fleeing Ukraine. And I was so proud to join the House of Ukraine’s event this past weekend in Balboa Park to recognize the one-year anniversary of Russia’s unprovoked and unwarranted invasion of Ukraine. I was grateful to visit Ukraine twice last year – once before the invasion and again in December. And the same unshakeable spirit of the Ukrainian people was captured through the stories and performances at the House of Ukraine. My colleagues and I will continue to support Ukraine through this war, through reconstruction, and through critical justice and accountability efforts. Because this isn’t just about winning the war – this is about winning the future of Ukraine and building a free, democratic, and open Ukraine.

The kids and I had a blast playing games and drawing together at the Chicano Federation’s Barrio Logan Child Development Center! I will keep pushing for big and bold federal investments in child care and early learning programs because the early years are so critical for kids’ future success.

It was so great visiting the Rolando Community Council to celebrate the success of the community-driven effort to rename the Rolando post office after Congresswoman Susan Davis! Some folks hadn’t heard that President Biden signed my bill renaming the post office in December, so I was happy to share the big news! On top of that, I loved that the Brownies of Troop 5014 shared informative tips on how to conserve water for all of us!

I’m so grateful for organizations like Survivors of Torture that have such big hearts, providing essential care, healing, and services for torture survivors living in San Diego. I will continue pushing for federal funding to support their essential work in our community.

Supporting kids and families has always been a big focus of my career and my work in Congress. So it was great to meet with the United Way of San Diego and learn more about their Early Learner project that helps low-income kids reach the 3rd-grade reading level.

Understanding the role inequality plays in perpetuating the cycle of violence is key to building a more peaceful, just, and equal society – both here at home and around the world. Before I was in Congress, I studied this exact issue at the State Department, so I was especially proud to secure $580,000 for USD’s Violence, Inequality, and Power Lab Fellowship program – to add much-needed data to the conversation on inequality driving violence and conflict. Thank you to USD President James T. Harris, III for joining me to celebrate this funding! I’m excited to see how far it will go.

We all know that there are big, global challenges ahead of us. To meet the scale of these problems, we need to bring everyone to the table and ensure the next generation’s science leaders are diverse and represent the full potential of our community. That’s why I was so glad to visit the Ocean Discovery Institute and learn more about their work encouraging kids from underserved communities to grow their love for science.

The rising cost of living in San Diego has made it even more difficult for seniors, especially those with a fixed income, to make ends meet. So I’m glad San Diego County is providing a rental subsidy to hundreds of seniors through a pilot program. You can find more details below:

I’m so proud to serve as Co-Chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force this term alongside my friend and colleague, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal! Extreme Republicans are stooping to new lows, finding new and creative ways to target trans rights – so we need to be united and unshakeable in supporting the trans and gender non-conforming communities. As many of you know, LGBTQ+ rights are incredibly important to me, as the sister of a trans brother and a gender non-conforming sibling. So I’m honored to hold this position to advocate for my siblings and the trans and GNC communities in San Diego and across the country.
