NATIVE AMERICAN EDUCATION CONFERENCE

  • The Wyoming Department of Education is calling for presenters for the 14th-annual Native American Education Conference, August 8-10, 2023, at Central Wyoming College in Riverton.
  • This year?s theme is ?The Whole Child - Addressing Mental, Emotional, and Physical Needs of Indigenous Students."?
  • Those interested in presenting should complete this survey by April 17, 2022 for consideration.
  • Each high school is being asked to choose their top Native American students for the annual Pacesetter Award. Winners will be honored during a ceremony at the conference.
  • Registration for attendees will open in April.

  • Reference the Wyoming Authoring Condensed User Guide to begin creating and sharing assessment items for all 10 content areas of Wyoming Standards.
  • The items will align to the Wyoming Content and Performance Standards or the Wyoming Extended Standards.
  • The full Wyoming Authoring User Guide is also available for detailed information about using the Authoring Tool.?
  • The Authoring Tool is located in the ?Before Testing? column of the Educators section on the Wyoming Assessment Portal.

WYOMING VETERANS WELCOME HOME DAY

March 25, 2023

  • In recognition of the members of the United States Armed Forces who served bravely and faithfully for the United States during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, as well as all the members of the United States Armed Forces who were not properly thanked or welcomed home following their military service, the governor is required to issue a proclamation requesting proper observance of Wyoming Veterans Welcome Home Day.
  • The day shall be appropriately observed in the public schools of the state and by organizations within the state.
  • This year, Wyoming Veterans Welcome Home day is scheduled for March 25, 2023. There will be ceremonies in Saratoga, Cody, Powell and Hulett. Speeches will be offered by various political officials and the Adjutant General of Wyoming, Major General Greg Porter.

TEACHER OPPORTUNITIES

  1. The Keizai Koho Center offers a Study Tour to Japan for North American middle and high school teachers. Ten teachers will be chosen to tour Japan in late June for 10 days, during which they will visit with teachers, students, and business leaders and discuss political, economic and social issues. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2023.
  2. The Society for Science Advocate Program provides a $3,000 stipend and year-round support for an individual (teacher, counselor, mentor) who agrees to serve as an advocate for 3-5 students from traditionally underrepresented racial or ethnic groups in scientific competitions. Learn more and apply here. Application deadline: March 5, 2023.
  3. Teachers in grades 3-12 are invited to apply for the inaugural Civics for All of US Teacher Institute program with the National Archives, in Washington, D.C., July 17-21, 2023. This event offers strategies for teaching civics with primary sources, special tours and activities at the National Archives Museum, and site visits to landmarks. Stipends are provided.   4. The University of Wyoming Science and Mathematics Teaching Center offers middle-level math and middle-level science graduate programs for summer 2023. The world needs more teachers who know how to stimulate curiosity and wonder in young minds, and who strive to create compelling instruction and encourage students to explore frontiers of scientific discovery. With an M.S. in Natural Science from UW, you can be that educator. Application deadline is April 28, 2023.?
  5. The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) conference is March 22-25 and the National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA) Leadership Summit is March 25 in Atlanta, Georgia.
  6. The On The Farm STEM Educator Professional Development will be in Denver, Colorado, June 11-14. Apply here.
  7. The Vernier Emerging Science Education Leadership Scholarship (VESELS) will take place in Providence, Rhode Island, June 27-29. It supports new or emerging science educational leaders in attending the NSELA Summer Leadership Institute. Learn more and apply here.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

  1. The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is offering summer internships, including an Indian Education for All internship. Students will engage in specialized learning experiences in a museum setting with options that include conservation, education, public relations, registration, and more. Apply here. Deadline is March 1, 2023.
  2. The 2023 Wyoming Arbor Day Poster Contest is open to all Wyoming 4th and 5th graders. This year?s theme is ?Wonderful, Wild, Wyoming Trees.? Deadline is March 15, 2023.
  3. The Wyoming Science Olympiad (WYSO) will be held April 1 and is designed to increase student interest in science and improve the quality of science education. Register by March 17, 2023.
  4. The NPR Student Podcast Challenge is a podcast submission contest where 5th-12th grade teachers can submit an audio file created by their students. Deadline is April 28, 2023.

SOCIAL STUDIES

  1. The Stanford History Education Group offers research-backed alternatives for assessing students' historical thinking skills and knowledge that can be used flexibly as bell ringers, exit slips, summative tests, and more.
  2. Thinking Nation offers free resources to help students mature into thinking citizens, equipped with the essential skills to participate in a robust democracy. Relying on constitutional principles as the foundation, students will be empowered to analyze information effectively, think historically, and write persuasively to build a more democratic future.
