Executive Director, Outright International

"At Outright, we know far too well that in times of crisis, LGBTIQ communities are often left behind in humanitarian relief efforts. This is why we launched a fund to mitigate the gaps and provide support to the organizations in Ukraine and surrounding countries. There has been an outpouring of international solidarity from more than 8,000 people across 75 countries. While news cycles move on and the world moves on to the next crisis, we are determined to continue to channel assistance to the LGBTIQ organizations on the frontlines. Social changes are sweeping across the Eastern Caribbean. To date, laws that criminalize consensual sexual intimacy between adults of the same sex have been struck down by courts in Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis, and, most recently, Barbados. Hear from our Caribbean Advocacy Officer, Leah Thompson, and advocates working on the ground about the progress in the region. Learn more
Outright has been working to support Ukrainian activists since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. To mark the one-year anniversary of this phase of the war — and ahead of Women’s History Month — Outright International’s LBQ Connect program is sharing the stories of lesbian, bisexual, queer and allied activists who have stepped up to help their communities amidst tremendous challenges. The Taliban’s return to power in August 2021 left many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) Afghans fearing for their lives. Hundreds sought to leave the country with help from foreign governments and non-governmental organizations, while many who chose to stay or could not leave went into hiding at home. This report was based on interviews with 60 LGBTIQ Afghans who shared stories of beatings, sexual assault, or threats from Taliban members or supporters because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people has been a staple of many armed conflicts and crises. But for governments and global institutions, persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity in conflict and crisis settings has been a blind spot. This briefing paper focuses primarily on crises that are under the purview of the UN Security Council, including armed conflict within and across member states’ borders and protracted humanitarian crises involving state and non-state actors. It presents an overview of how LGBTQ individuals are uniquely affected by armed conflict and crises and interrogates the current lack of LGBTQ inclusion in peace and security discussions and policymaking. Explore now
