While mis- and disinformation can feel like a digital phenomenon, a recent Poynter collaboration proved that bad actors seeking to divide communities by spreading falsehoods are nothing new.

PolitiFact’s Gabrielle Settles and MediaWise’s Sal Rodriguez — from Poynter’s fact-checking and media literacy arms — worked together to write a story ([link removed]) about an insidious antisemitic conspiracy theory, most recently amplified by Ye and Kyrie Irving, that’s designed to divide Black and Jewish communities. The pair talked with analysts and history experts, as well as Black and Jewish people, about this conspiracy theory, which historians said originated as early as the 1800s.

“This may sound cliche, but it’s important to stand together, not stand apart,” Gabrielle said in this Instagram Live ([link removed]) . “I think we all have the opportunity to fight against it, and I hope that’s what people take away.”

Their findings ([link removed]) might be able to help you spot this dangerous rhetoric in your community and help you decide how to handle it without amplifying it.

Lead With Influence
Online group seminar, July 10-31
Most leadership training is designed for supervisors who have direct reports. But in today’s newsrooms, leaders are just as often responsible for projects, products or people across departments. Demonstrating leadership without formal authority is its own skill, and it’s core to this online leadership workshop from Poynter.
Pulling from the best practices, feedback and application needs of Poynter’s flagship Leadership Academy for Women in Media, this four-session workshop was originally designed to help women and nonbinary journalists in the industry use their social capital to lead with influence. Due to industry-wide demand for this kind of leadership training, we’ve made this iteration of Lead With Influence open to all gender identities.
Cost: $600. Apply by June 2.
