February Recap

Below are updates on what has been happening in Albany throughout the month of February. We will be asking you to take action on a number of the issues below over the course of the legislative session, so stay tuned.

Assisted Suicide

Proponents of doctor-assisted suicide are making a full court press to legalize this deadly practice in New York State, and lawmakers need to hear from their constituents if we hope to avoid yet another assault on human life here. Assisted suicide is dangerous for patients, caregivers, and vulnerable populations such as the elderly and people with disabilities. Killing is not a medical treatment. Please tell your State Senate and Assembly representatives that you oppose this dangerous and deadly practice.

Catholic School Funding

As lawmakers work out the details of the New York State budget, it’s vital that we fight for funding to support tuition-paying families and critical services to our Catholic schools. With only 5 weeks left before the budget is due, now is the time to add your voice so that our parents and students get their fair share.

Radical Solidarity

Radical Solidarity is the New York State Catholic Conference’s pro-life, pro-woman legislative agenda, in which we stand in radical solidarity with women who are pregnant and mothers in need.

The agenda includes such items as investments in prenatal and maternal health, an expansion of the Empire State Child Tax Credit, an adoption tax credit, childcare expansion, educational options for children, creation of affordable housing, support for women and children fleeing domestic violence, enhanced nutrition programs, and expansion of paid parental leave.

There is so much space for common ground in support of the common good. We look forward to working with lawmakers to advance this agenda.

Catholic Charities Directors Meeting

The Catholic Charities agencies from across the State were represented at a two-day advocacy event February 6th and 7th. Catholic Charities hosted a reception for State agencies, legislators and staff, which was well attended. They spent a day meeting with elected officials and agency staff to discuss the impact of Catholic Charities’ work across the State, as well as their needs to continue in their important work.
