friend,
As I write this, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is rapidly mobilizing to save lives from compounding crises around the globe—from the devastating earthquake that claimed 46,000 lives in Turkey (officially renamed Türkiye) and Syria earlier this month, to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, to a massive measles outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo.
This is possible for one reason: independent donors allow us to be ready to respond and save lives at a moment’s notice.
Help us respond to the earthquake in Türkiye and Syria, and provide care in Ukraine, Democratic Republic of Congo, and more than 70 other countries—with DOUBLE the impact—by making a MATCHED gift to MSF before 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7.
So many of our staff members have been personally impacted by these compounding tragedies. Take Samar, an MSF health supervisor in northwestern Syria. She was awoken at home with her husband and children by the terrifying tremors of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks. Horrifically, several of her family members were killed.
“It felt like doomsday,” says Samar. “Many parents were burying their children. Others were under the rubble. No family was spared. Every family lost one or several loved ones.”
Our teams are navigating seemingly insurmountable challenges, coordinating complex logistics in order to distribute tents and clothes. They are working late into the night, distributing essential kits containing blankets and tents. Our staff are supporting hospitals and clinics that remained functional after the earthquake, providing emergency medical care for injured survivors. We are also providing mental health care to help survivors process the trauma and massive loss of life they’ve endured.
Due to restrictions on humanitarian aid access, MSF is one of the few organizations on the ground in Northwestern Syria. In the aftermath of additional earthquakes in the distressed region, our work is a vital lifeline. With the continued support of our generous donor community, we’ll show up wherever we’re needed, for however long we’re needed.
