** Welcome to the second STOP THE TRAFFIK Group newsletter of 2023.

This month, we saw a number of devastating humanitarian emergencies impacting vulnerable communities around the world.

The earthquakes in Southern Türkiye and Northern Syria have caused unimaginable loss of life and the recovery process is expected to take many years.

Friday, 24th February 2023 marked the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The war has claimed the lives of thousands of people, with millions displaced, fleeing their homes, and seeking safety. Our Ukraine Project Manager, Ilona, wrote an incredibly moving blog on her personal experiences, which you can read here ([link removed]) .

Consistent with both of these tragedies is the need not only to protect the immediate threat to life, but to safeguard displaced communities from traffickers. Our experience and the trusted networks we have developed puts STOP THE TRAFFIK Group in a unique position to respond.

Work we conducted around the Haiti Earthquake in 2010 and the Nepal Earthquake in 2015 demonstrated significantly increased reports of trafficking. Combined with this, our ongoing crisis response in Ukraine has shown us that preventing potentially exploitative situations in the wake of natural disasters and conflict must complement the rescue effort itself.

** So, what will our response look like in the coming months?
------------------------------------------------------------

In Türkiye and Syria, we are working with our on-the-ground partners to deliver two prevention campaigns. The first is aimed at keeping unaccompanied minors safe who may be vulnerable to trafficking; the second is targeted at aid workers, helping them spot the signs of bad actors and potentially exploitative behaviour. This is all based on our intelligence gathering and where we see the greatest need.

In Ukraine, we are launching a new phase of our campaign which will reach audiences through Facebook and Instagram sponsored adverts. We aim to reach individuals and families travelling to, and waiting at, the border points between Ukraine-Poland, Ukraine-Moldova and Ukraine-Romania, with specific information about how to stay safe and avoid exploitation.

Our intelligence gathering and prevention programmes help us stay one step ahead of the traffickers. This gives us an accurate picture of what is happening and enables us to provide support information to vulnerable communities.

To help us reach as many people as possible with our prevention programmes, please donate if you can.

Thank you for your ongoing support; it means everything.
