** February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and Black History Month
------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friend,

This month we acknowledge two nationally recognized awareness months very important to our work: Black History Month and Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. We honor the ongoing struggle for racial justice in our communities, and together celebrate Black voices, projects and programs. We promote awareness and education around teen dating violence, building healthy youth relationships and provide opportunities for engagement with our Prevention team this month and all year long. We remain committed to social justice, social service, and social change.

** TDVAM: Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
------------------------------------------------------------
February is a month where youth and adult allies come together to mobilize around the issue of teen dating violence. Teen dating violence is a pattern of behavior where one person uses intimidation, threats of or actual physical, emotional or sexual violence in order to maintain power and control over their partner.

One in three teens will experience dating violence, which can have a deep negative impact physically and psychologically. Only 1 in 3 youth experiencing dating violence have an adult they can confide in.

POV’s prevention programming is an integral part of our services. We firmly believe that violence is preventable, and are dedicated to bringing awareness and resources to this critical issue. Throughout this month, the Prevention team has been making an immense impact in the Los Angeles Metro area through our outreach events including talks, presentations, tabling events, and resource distribution efforts. Being able to engage with the community in person has been especially rewarding, allowing us to hear directly from community members and gain valuable feedback and insight. Our in-person presentations have been met with enthusiasm and gratitude, fostering a sense of community and belonging as they work to create a safe and supportive environment for all.
We recently had the opportunity to participate in a rally at the CA State Capitol for Orange Day, a day where people wear orange to show support surrounding teen dating violence. Our prevention staff and youth participants were invited to speak at the rally and share their experiences with legislators, making their voices heard on issues related to violence prevention and community support. This was a truly inspiring event, showcasing the power of community engagement and advocacy.

A recent report released by the CDC ([link removed]) reveals teen girls and LGBTQ+ youth are facing alarmingly high levels of sexual violence, mental distress, and substance abuse.

POV remains steadfast in our commitment to violence prevention and creating a safe and supportive community for all. As we continue to make a positive impact throughout the year, we also want to remind community members that applications for our Summer Youth Leadership Institute are now open. We encourage all interested youth to apply and share the application ([link removed]) with others who may be interested in becoming leaders in their community. Together we will work towards building a brighter and more peaceful future for us all.
