Late last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case challenging a Trump administration rule that would gut the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA’s) contraception guarantee, further putting a spotlight on reproductive rights this session. This rule would allow employers and universities to impose their religious views and “moral objections” to block countless women from receiving health insurance coverage for contraception.

This rule jeopardizes one of the most important advancements for women’s health in a generation and aims to restrict access to birth control for women across the United States. Restricting a woman’s ability to decide whether and when to have children by severely limiting access to contraception is unacceptable. It defies the clear mandate set forth in the Affordable Care Act, and is discriminatory and unconstitutional.
At the Center for Reproductive Rights, we believe the ability to access affordable contraception should never depend on other people’s religious beliefs, nor where you work or where you go to school. That’s why we have our own case challenging this rule as well as an unlawful contract executed between the Trump-Pence administration and the University of Notre Dame that gives the University permission to deny students, employees, and their dependents contraceptive coverage.
