Meet 10-year-old Sonya from Kharkiv, Ukraine.
Shortly after the war began a year ago, Sonya and her family sought shelter from immediate gunfire and shelling in a metro station that was repurposed by UNICEF as a safe space for children and families.

Today, Sonya is far from home. After some time in the Kharkiv metro station, her family relocated to Spain. Sonya is grateful to be with her family in a place that has a kitchen for her grandma to cook in and beds to sleep in, a place that they can call home, at least for now. Sonya says of her new living situation: “My dream is the end of the war. I want to go back home so much.” Safety is critically important, but there’s no place like home.
Seeing Sonya settle into safety with her family is a gift like no other. This is why UNICEF works tirelessly to help kids like Sonya survive the traumatic experience of war and displacement — so they can have a future where they can thrive. A year later, the war continues and there are more and more children who still need your support in Ukraine and around the world.
