Our democracy is fragile, and it is precious. The American experiment is one of the most radical exercises in self-government in history, and for the past several years, I have witnessed just how much of it is at risk.

I saw its fragility when a president of the United States abused his power in ways that were once unthinkable. When a president withheld military aid to Ukraine to extort that country into helping him cheat in the election. And when Republican members of the House refused to stand up to him. I witnessed its vulnerability when I led the first impeachment trial in history to secure a bipartisan vote to remove a president, but in which too many Republican Senators — all but one — failed to live up to their oaths of office.

I've witnessed our democracy's fragility with the nationwide assault on voting rights, and on the right to reproductive freedom.

And of course, I’ve witnessed the big lies of the former president and his allies about our elections — and seen how they manifested in a violent insurrection against the very government and Constitution we are sworn to defend.

Mitch McConnell refused to bring Donald Trump’s second impeachment to trial before Trump left office, and then claimed he couldn’t impeach him because he had already left office. So much of the fight for our democracy in the future will take place in the United States Senate. We cannot let the opportunity to protect voting rights, and strengthen our democracy pass us by because of an unconscionable devotion to the filibuster. In the Senate, I will fight to pass the Protecting our Democracy Act, legislation I authored and which was prevented from a vote by McConnell. And to do away with the filibuster once and for all!

Protecting our democracy, strengthening our economy and saving the planet — this is why I'm running, and we have less than 72 hours until our February deadline. We're running a bit behind our goal.
