The war in Ukraine has changed the meaning of childhood for millions. There’s no place to play outside when the threat of missiles hangs in the air. Learning isn’t possible when schools are buried in rubble. Precious time with friends and family is lost when on the move.
Every day the cost of war disrupts children’s lives, especially for the most vulnerable who have been displaced from their homes and are now living as refugees. Right now, there are around 7.7 million war refugees hosted in Europe, approximately 40 percent of whom are children. And that total number is expected to reach nearly 10 million this year.
UNICEF continues to reach children on the move — whether they’re fleeing war in Ukraine or humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan — with support like Child-Friendly Spaces which provide children and families with a place to rest, play and receive essential services.

At Blue Dot Child-Friendly Spaces established jointly with UNHCR and partners, teams offer mental health support to help displaced and refugee children deal with trauma and stress from their experiences and provide emergency supplies for highly vulnerable children, including children with disabilities. With a safe space to find respite from the danger of war and crisis, a child has the chance to remember what a normal childhood can be.
The large-scale displacement we’re seeing in Ukraine and the escalating global refugee crisis will have consequences for generations to come. The continuation of both could mean more childhoods will be disrupted and more futures will be stolen.
