The Ohio train derailment is yet another devastating incident generating conspiracy theories online.

On both sides of the aisle, misinformation surrounding the circumstances of the incident have led to suggestions of a cover-up by the US government and the mainstream media.

News media are already struggling to regain public trust in the post-Trump era. Though these narratives highlight real public concern for safety and the environment, placing blame on the media could further harm the reputation of legitimate sources of information.
