John,
Police are working towards destroying a forest in Atlanta, Georgia to create a fake city for practicing militarized tactics against civilians.
This would also devastate the watershed upon which a nearby Black community depends.
Right now, the Weelaunee Forest offsets stormwater runoff, helps to keep the city cool, and improves air quality. Studies show that green spaces can support community well-being and safety, including reducing crime.
Instead of investing in ways to make our communities safer, the Atlanta Police Foundation wants to spend $90 million on destroying the forest to create Cop City -- so more militarized police can learn how to enact more violence on primarily Black and brown communities. This makes us all less safe.
But, since Cop City does not yet have the full funding necessary to scale the project, they’re turning to private investors. There’s still time to put pressure on these investors to halt all funding to the Atlanta Police Foundation and APF Support Inc.
Sign the petition to private investors: No massive police training complex. Protect the Weelaunee Forest and stop Cop City!
Last month, police murdered one of the forest defenders, Tortuguita, who was living in the forest with other activists to block the project.
Now, the police are trying to charge at least 19 protesters with domestic terrorism, for activities including “sleeping in the forest” and being “known members” of “a prison abolitionist movement.”
We can support the righteous forest defenders by pressuring private investors to halt all funding for the project. Let’s honor Tortuguita, with action.
Add your name to call on private investors to defend the Weelaunee Forest and stop plans for a massive police training complex known as Cop City.
In solidarity,
Rashida
