Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has been under criticism for months -- for mishandling airline accountability and now mishandling the toxic train wreck near where I live in Ohio.
Thousands of PCCC members and others demanded Buttigieg make rail safety rules stronger after corporations spent years lobbying to weaken them...Finally, we’ve seen inches of action. But there are miles left to go.
It’s long past time for Secretary Buttigieg to hold major transportation corporations accountable. He should reinstate and enforce Obama-era safety regulations gutted by Trump and pass even stronger rules to ensure public safety comes before monopolies trying to cut corners for profit.
For too long, giant transportation companies have used their wealth and influence to weaken federal regulations. And under Trump, the corporate lobbyists were VERY successful.
It’s inexcusable that two years into a Democratic Administration, Pete Buttigieg has not undone the damage Trump and corporate lobbyists did to our transportation-related public safety regulations and consumer protections.
The Lever is an investigative publication featured recently in the New York Times. They call Buttigieg "a corporate-friendly pol" who has been hesitant to use his power to reign in corporate greed.
But workers, communities, and the public need to see the Department of Transportation work to make transportation safe and efficient -- not boost profits for CEOs and corporate investors. And voters need to see it happen -- before the election in 2024.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
