A quick recap: Last year, Congress passed a bill into law that boosted IRS funding, allowing the IRS to go after wealthy tax-cheats and provide better customer service to everyday taxpayers—helping you get a faster refund or being able to answer questions.
Why this was necessary: The IRS was defunded by Republicans in 2010, allowing ultra-wealthy people to go without audits and empowering corporations to cheat. With 50,000 IRS workers set to retire soon, we needed to get new personnel trained and ready to simply keep the IRS running.
But in their first month in power, House Republicans passed a bill that would rescind this much-needed IRS funding. The only ones who benefit from an under-funded IRS are big corporations who evade taxes. When corporations avoid taxes, working people are left to pick up the slack, and the Republican bill would have added $114 billion (!) to the deficit over ten years.
Katie was proud to oppose this bill. It won’t become law any time soon thanks to our Senate majority and President Biden—but this is a clear example of who Republicans fight for when they have power.
