John,

While many coal plants have been shut down along The Great Lakes, their coal ash pollution is becoming a “ticking bomb” for clean water in the region — and the country.

CLEAN WATER GOAL » [link removed]

111 coal ash waste sites exist along The Great Lakes, which have created enough coal ash pollution to potentially fill 17,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

A byproduct of producing coal energy, coal ash contains toxic metals like arsenic, lead, and mercury. All of these toxins have been linked to causing cancer — it’s a massive public health and environmental disaster just waiting to strike.

This isn’t just a small regional concern, John. The Great Lakes hold over 80% of North America’s surface freshwater and are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. They provide drinking water for more than 30 million people — we cannot let this clean water crisis go unchecked!

That’s why SEEC Member Rep. Steve Cohen introduced the Ensuring the Safe Disposal of Coal Ash Act to strengthen protections against coal ash contamination. SEEC members of Congress like Rep. Cohen will never let up on this issue until all of our drinking water is free of toxic pollutants. That’s why we must support our SEEC Members fighting to protect our health and our environment. Can you contribute today to help re-elect them?
