Friends -

When you spend five years running for office and have three tough elections in those five years, people often ask you what keeps you going. I’ve got one answer I always return to: service.

I was in New York City on my second day of grad school when 9/11 happened, and it changed my life. I knew I wanted to dedicate my career to national security. I went on to serve at the CIA, the White House, and the Pentagon, where I worked on some of the world’s toughest problems.

Running for office is a way for me to continue my service to this country and to Michigan.

And this week, I’ve been reminded of how important service is after the tragedy at Michigan State University, the second school shooting in my district in 15 months. Our community is grieving and we need our elected leaders in Congress to wake up and realize what should be a no-brainer: We should be able to have a real conversation about keeping our kids safe.

Whether it’s passing laws to make our communities and children safer or fighting for protections for people with pre-existing conditions and bringing down the over-the-top price of healthcare — I will always try to serve Michiganders with hard work, present leadership, and a commitment to making things a little bit easier.

I just wrote an op-ed in the Detroit Free Press about the work we are doing in Michigan in response to the tragedy at Michigan State University. If you have time, give it a read and stay up to date with our work.

My very best,

Elissa
