Dear Mr. xxxxxx:
Good Saturday morning on this final weekend of February.
Although this may be the shortest month of the year, we still accomplished a lot in the House of Representatives during the last few weeks. From government accountability legislation to preparing for our annual 4th District Art Competition, there’s plenty to share with you here as we head into March.
Government Accountability
H.R. 185: Passed the House of Representatives on February 8, and aims to block a CDC order that requires international travelers to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination in order to enter the U.S. on an airplane.
H. J. Res. 24: Passed the House of Representatives on February 9,and aims to block the District of Columbia’s City Council statute to allow illegal immigrants and foreign citizens to vote in D.C. elections.
H. J. Res. 26: Passed the House of Representatives on February 9, and aims to block the District of Columbia’s City Council statute to eliminate mandatory minimums and reduces maximum sentences for violent criminals in D.C.
Security Summit
Earlier this month, I was honored to host a Security Forum with leaders from every nation in the Balkans. As Russia and China continue to escalate tensions and threaten the sovereignty of neighboring countries, hearing from some of our European friends whose countries are at the heart of these issues is crucial in the planning and implementation of national security resources.
The Forum focused on the threats posed by adversarial powers and was designed to highlight the concerns of the leaders of the Balkan countries.. We heard from our friends in southeastern Europe about the threat Russia poses to the region, as well as from a young lady who shared her story of being expelled from Hong Kong and about the broader situation related to the atrocities occurring in China.
DeKalb County Child Advocacy Center 30th Anniversary
The DeKalb County Child Advocacy Center is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. This past weekend they wrapped up the final performance of their annual dinner theater to raise funds for the center. I was happy to record a video to help them celebrate and to point out the good work they have done the past three decades. You can watch that video below.
Annual Congressional Art Competition
Earlier this month we announced our annual 4th District Art Competition for high school students. This is a competition that every Congressional District in the country has hosted since 1982. This year, our competition has some exciting new additions.
As usual, the student whose artwork wins Best of Show will receive a scholarship offer from the Savannah School of Art and Design and their piece will hang inside the U.S. Capitol Complex for the next year; however, this year, the Best of Show winner will also receive a full two-year scholarship to Wallace State Community College.
But as they say on those infomercials, “wait there’s more.” This year, the winners of the seven individual art categories will also receive a ¾ scholarship to Wallace. Those categories are: Paintings, Drawings, Collages, Prints, Mixed Media, Computer Generated and Photographs.
So, there is a lot of incentive for our high school students to enter this year. It’s open to all students grades 9-12 who attend school in the 4th District, or who are homeschooled in the 4th District. For more information, please email Pam Abernathy at [email protected]
May God bless you and your loved ones and I hope you have a Happy St. Patrick's Day coming up on March 17th.
Sincerely,
Robert B. Aderholt
