Dear John,
Every five years, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS) work together to update and release Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The resulting guidelines create and inform federal policy, school lunch menus, nutritional education programs, state and local health initiatives, and so much more.
There is a growing scientific consensus that a whole food, plant-based diet provides an array of health benefits for individuals of all ages and lifestyles. We hope that the new dietary guidelines will reflect this body of evidence. However, in past years, the political influence of food and beverage lobbyists has led to strong critiques of the Dietary Guidelines.
In preparation for a public meeting on January 23 & 24, the Dietary Guidelines Committee is currently in the process of reviewing scientific evidence on nutrition and health, while seeking public input into the scientific review. Because these guidelines will have a tremendous impact on policy and consumer choices, this is a unique opportunity to impact policy.
Here’s how you can have an impact:
|
1. Research and submit a public comment The committee is seeking input in the form of public comments regarding their scientific review. Specifically, they are looking for well-researched analysis, facts and data, as well as reports to include in their analysis. Learn more here.
2. Share this email Do you know a dietitian, nutrition expert, or plant-based advocate who might want to submit a comment? If so, forward this email to them, and help spread the word about this opportunity!
3. Eat a plant-based diet Every year, more and more health experts, athletes, and everyday people are choosing to keep animal products off their plates. Through our own choices, we can influence others (as well as the market), and open more hearts and minds to the joy of plant-based diets.

If you are looking to make the switch to a plant-based diet, or simply eat more plant-based meals, here are some resources that might help you!
In health and compassion,
