Today is the 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This case has been a cornerstone in securing women the right to their bodies everywhere.

It hasn’t been perfect. Women still face an uphill battle to control their reproductive health. Birth control is expensive. Sex education is minimal. Tampons and other hygiene products are subject to tax because they are not considered “basic necessities.”

But thanks to Roe v. Wade, we have the right to choose, in conjunction with our doctors, what is best for us. This landmark case has been paramount for expanding equal rights.

So much of my life has been shaped by fighting for those rights.

I began my career in 1978 knocking doors to gather support for the Equal Rights Amendment. Then, I was Director of the Maine Women’s Lobby and Commissioner for Women under two governors.

I have fought for nearly four decades because I believe that women should have the right to choose, and that comprehensive healthcare is a necessity.

Roe v. Wade is now facing its most violent attack since it was enacted. After years of planning, Mitch McConnell has rigged our court system, from bottom to top.

McConnell has pushed through dozens of anti-choice judges in courts around the country, with the endgame of mounting a challenge to Roe v. Wade.

Senator Susan Collins has voted to appoint 32 of those anti-choice judges. She even voted to appoint Justice Brett Kavanaugh, whose judicial record demonstrates an extreme hostility to reproductive freedom.

It’s time to gear up for another fight. I’ve been fighting for women and equal rights throughout my 37-year career. I’m ready to fight to ensure all Mainers have equal rights. I’m ready to fight for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and to get big money out of politics.

This fight won’t be easy. And it won’t be won by politicians dependent on corporate cash and special interests.

This is a job for a movement – a people-powered grassroots campaign ready to do the work, stand up to the naysayers, and fight to win.
