On Tuesday, State Senator Jennifer McClellan [[link removed]] won a special election for Virginia's 4th Congressional District, becoming the first Black woman to represent Virginia in Congress! This is a historic moment—before Tuesday, only 22 states had ever elected a Black woman to Congress.
It’s about time that Black women, who have always been at the forefront of organizing and activism in U.S. politics, are given the opportunity to lead and represent our communities in Congress and across all levels of government.

The Biden administration has announced that it’s moving forward with a proposed asylum ban [[link removed]] , which would prohibit any migrants from applying for asylum in the U.S. unless they have already been turned away from asylum in another country. In other words, this policy—which is almost identical to Trump’s “transit ban”—will put the lives of countless asylum seekers at risk.
We stand with those in office who have already spoken out [[link removed]] about President Biden’s proposed rule and urge him to do better. He might have forgotten about his campaign promise to renew the United States’ commitment to protect immigrant communities, but we haven’t.

New York City Councilmember Crystal Hudson [[link removed]] took our Ready to Lead: New American Women and Ready to Win trainings in 2019. Two years later, she ran for office and won, making history as one of the first out gay Black women ever elected in New York City.
Colorado State Representative Naquetta Ricks [[link removed]] attended our Ready to Lead: Colorado training in 2019. In November 2020, she was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives, becoming the first African immigrant elected to the Colorado legislature and the first Liberian woman to ever hold an elected position in a U.S. state legislature.
In November 2022, Munira Abdullahi [[link removed]] became the first Muslim woman to win a seat in the Ohio legislature. But just a few months before that, she was in Detroit taking our Ready to Lead: Midwest training. As she told us recently, “New American Leaders taught me how to articulate my 'why' and be able to direct my message to the people in a way that is digestible and relatable. This lesson has been extremely valuable in reaching my constituents and getting their overwhelming support.”
