Here are some updates from the last few days.
On Tuesday, Feb. 21, Texas Republicans introduced Senate Bill 2, which would raise the penalty for illegally voting from a misdemeanor to a felony, a drastic increase that could inadvertently harm voters. The bill would also change the standard for determining someone’s intent for illegally voting in ways that could ensnare individuals who vote without knowing that they are ineligible. [link removed]
Here’s what to expect coming up.
The U.S. Supreme Court will release decisions in pending cases on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Court could announce opinions in any of the cases that have already been argued, including the major voting rights cases Merrill v. Milligan and Moore v. Harper. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.
