John,

This month’s landmark Commonwealth Court ruling against PA’s school funding system is a great leap forward for our historically disenfranchised and neglected communities.

Under the current system, Pennsylvania has one of the worst spending gaps between higher-income and lower-income districts in the country. This funding gap in turn creates a marked “achievement gap” which further disadvantages students from already under-resourced communities.

Now, it’s up to the courts to rule on any appeals to this decision, the legislature to write the legislation to address it, and the voters to hold them accountable. As a voting rights organization, you can probably guess where we come in.

One of the best tools to reach equity in every aspect of our society is empowering all voters to be a force for change in their own right. That’s what makes our work to expand the electorate centering historically disenfranchised and often neglected Black, Indigenous and other people of color, immigrant communities and the youth so important. Will you donate $10 now to help us stand up against inequity?

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented immigrant communities and communities of color. We register communities to vote, provide civic education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize Pennsylvanians to vote in every election.
