Dear John, On February 3rd a Norfolk Southern train derailed near East Palestine, Ohio, right on the Pennsylvania/Ohio border. Fifty cars derailed—including 11 carrying hazardous petrochemicals like vinyl chloride—resulting in a huge release of hazardous chemicals into the air, land, and water. Residents in Pennsylvania and Ohio were briefly evacuated, but people have returned and have been repeatedly told that they are “safe” despite fish dying, people getting rashes and having difficulty breathing, as well as dealing with a lack of transparency from government officials. This is an ongoing petrochemical disaster, and Pennsylvania and Ohio officials need to take transparent, proactive steps to ensure residents in both states are able access the information and get the support that they urgently need. Join me in calling on Pennsylvania and Ohio officials to: - Provide medical monitoring.
- Support independent environmental testing.
- Meet with residents regularly, in-person, on an ongoing basis.
