John --
During the impeachment of President Nixon, members of his own party stepped up and spoke out against corruption from the administration. They demanded transparency and fought to safeguard the democratic oaths they took when swearing into office.
Yesterday’s vote on rules for the impeachment of President Trump has made it clear: We cannot expect any Republican Senator to do the same today.
In an astounding display of cowardice, EVERY SINGLE Republican Senator voted down amendments to subpoena documents from the White House, State Department and Defense Department. Republican Senators also refused to allow Democrats to call for testimony from John Bolton, Mick Mulvaney, and two other crucial witnesses.
Yesterday’s vote proved what so many of us suspected; Senate Republicans aren’t interested in getting to the truth. Even worse, they are actively trying to hide information from the American people.
This shameful display by Senate Republicans is a blatant disregard of the oath of office each member has taken:
“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.”
It is the Senate’s responsibility to safeguard our Constitutional system of checks and balances and hold the President accountable when he steps over the line. No one is above the law -- not even the President.
Trump admitted himself that he pressured the Ukranian government to investigate a political rival and even stated, on national television, that he would do it again with other countries like China. Trump has used the office of the Presidency for his own political gain time and again.
The tenets of our Democratic Republic are only as strong as those who are willing to uphold them. Right now it’s up to the Senate to safeguard our Democracy. It shouldn’t matter what party has the majority!
Brand New Congress is supporting three powerhouse progressive U.S. Senate candidates who are challenging three Trump-supporting Republicans. If we want to make real change we must elect Betsy Sweet in Maine, Kimberly Graham in Iowa and Paula Jean Swearengin in West Virginia.
It’s going to take all the resources we can gather to win these statewide races. Winning these three seats can help reshape the Senate for the next six years and beyond.
Can you contribute $20.20 today to help us reshape the Senate?
