Hi Friend, Members of Congress are headed back to D.C. this week, and while I wish I could say their return fills me with hope, the current state of partisan bickering means that we shouldn’t expect them to get much done on their own. And with our nation continuing to sleepwalk towards a fiscal cliff later this year, that spells bad news for all of us. Instead of doing anything productive to address the debt-ceiling crisis that could spark an economic catastrophe for millions of American families and businesses, both sides have settled into a comfortable routine of either passively standing by or ginning up political conflict for their own gain. No one feels any urgency to be the first to act. That’s why No Labels has been pounding a consistent drumbeat: Stop the game of chicken and start grownup negotiations right now. Besides urgency, what’s missing from the current non-dialogue are the voices of real people, the ones who will be most affected by the higher mortgage rates and lost jobs that a debt default could bring. And that isn’t a coincidence. As so often happens, members of Congress are not reacting to the concerns of their constituents because they aren’t hearing the concerns of their constituents. No one is making it clear to Congress that they need to do more than just stall, posture, and fight. We want to get Capitol Hill off of its collective bum by making you and other “real” people part of the conversation – and to do that, we need your help. Please click HERE to briefly tell us why you are concerned about the cataclysmic consequences that will occur if we don’t meet our debt obligations and restrain the growth of federal spending. |
