John,
Millions of people are about to see their benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) -- formerly known as food stamps -- cut because lawmakers in Congress stipulated that pandemic-era emergency allotments must wind down, even as food prices remain historically high.
Now, members of Congress are holding SNAP hostage and threatening even more drastic cuts during negotiations around raising the country’s debt ceiling before the U.S. defaults this summer.
The United States is the richest country on Earth and yet, 34 million people are food insecure -- including 9 million children.1 This is a stunning failure that falls at the feet of policy makers who too often prioritize corporate and millionaire profits over vulnerable communities and children. It is a moral wrong as well as being wrong-headed -- inadequate nutrition can lead to health and developmental problems that have high costs for all of us.
Cutting nutrition benefits for low-income adults and children will do nothing to address our federal debt. Making the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share will.
Chip in $5 to fight back against attempts to cut SNAP food benefits for the poor.

1 Hunger In America
-- DEBORAH'S EMAIL --
John,
No one should go hungry in the richest country in the world. Yet, if certain lawmakers in the House of Representatives have their way, that’s exactly what will happen in the ongoing negotiations to raise the debt ceiling.
Right-wing members of Congress continue to promise to eliminate the federal deficit over the next decade -- by making extreme cuts to social programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.1
Millions of SNAP participants are already slated to lose $90 a month on average per person this March, because that is when Congress has decided to end pandemic Emergency Allotments. These harsh cuts are occurring despite rising food prices nationwide. But that’s not enough for the right-wing. They want more cuts to SNAP, which would be devastating for millions of households and drive people further into poverty.
We’re not taking this lying down. The Coalition on Human Needs is joining our partners and allies to put the pressure on Congress to expand SNAP benefits -- and to reject onerous work requirements and other cuts. This is critical work to ensure that no one goes hungry, and we need your help. Chip in $5 today to fight for food access for everyone.

SNAP remains the most effective tool this country has to combat hunger for children, adults with disabilities, and veterans. The extremists who want to force cuts in basic needs programs before allowing an increase in the federal authority to borrow would like to shrink the SNAP program, in part through work requirements that will wind up denying food to poor people. The majority of working age people without disabilities who receive SNAP benefits are working or have worked recently. They just happen to work in unstable, low-paying jobs. SNAP benefits help them fill in the gaps between what they earn and the rising cost of groceries. It also frees up more money in their paychecks for housing and medical costs.2
People need food in order to live, work, and learn. SNAP has been shown to improve student performance and improve overall health outcomes. Inflicting more cuts on this program would be immoral, especially since we’re in such economically precarious times and inflation continues to drive up the cost of groceries.
A budget is a moral document, and it’s also an engine for shared prosperity that leaves no one behind. Help us hold Congress accountable to prevent hunger and provide security so that children can thrive and adults can work. Rush a donation of $5 today to fund the fight against hunger.
