Hello Friend,
Welcome to my e-newsletter, the Ready Room. As a retired Naval Aviator, the Ready Room is special to me because it’s where fellow aviators meet to brief and debrief missions. This is my weekly briefing to you on my mission in Congress. Please follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how my team and I are working to serve you in Congress.
Saving Victims of Cardiac Arrest
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the third leading cause of death in America and the #1 cause of unexpected death. The recent incident involving Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin demonstrated how SCA indiscriminately strikes people of all ages and fitness levels – even world class athletes. Quick deployment of an automated external defibrillator (AED) saved his life, but thousands of people each year are not as fortunate. Early intervention with CPR and AEDs does save lives. Unfortunately, conflicting state laws and concerns over lawsuits have prevented wider access to this life-saving technology.
That’s why Rep. Gerry Connolly and I introduced H.R. 1012, the Cardiac Arrest Survival Act. This bipartisan, common sense bill will save lives by establishing a uniform base of liability protection for businesses that acquire AEDs and the Good Samaritans that use them. This solution will increase the survival rate from Sudden Cardiac Arrests (SCAs) and encourage higher use of AEDs. Click here to learn more.
Protecting Florida's Waterways
In recent years, algal blooms have had devastating effects on our environment, wildlife, economy, and coastal communities. Protecting Florida's waterways is critical to our state's tourism industry and ecosystems. That's why I supported H.R. 1008, the Combat Harmful Algal Blooms Act, which expands the definition of "major disasters" to include algal blooms harmful to our environment and ensure federal disaster funding would be allocated to fight this issue in the same way that funding goes to tornado and hurricane recovery. Fostering Future Military Leaders
Thanks to everyone who attended our Academy Day at Polk State College last weekend. It's great to see so many bright young people interested in serving our country! Attending the Naval Academy taught me the importance of hard work and serving a greater mission. I'm grateful for the opportunity to support the next generation of military leaders.
