Friends —
In less than one week, the conservative Supreme Court majority will hear a case on whether to uphold the Biden Administration’s student debt relief program which would grant over 44 million borrowers life-changing debt relief.
With the cost of tuition skyrocketing, higher education has become inaccessible to lower income students, forcing many who dream of earning their degree to take on thousands of dollars of student loans at the mere age of 18.
Collectively, borrowers across the country now owe over $1.7 trillion in student loans. Borrowers of color take on a disproportionate amount of that debt, leading to the exacerbation of generational wealth inequality.
This is a crisis.
We’ve thrown young Americans into debt right as they begin adulthood, and now, millions of Americans of all ages face years of debt payments with interest, putting the American Dream farther out of reach.
The Biden Administration’s debt relief program could change the lives of many struggling Americans, but it’s at risk under the conservative Supreme Court majority.
As an educator myself, I understand the importance of a college education and how impactful it can be for lower income students trying to break the cycle of poverty and advance in society. But under no circumstance should any American have to choose between their monthly student loan payment and putting food on the table.
