Factory farms are endangering our rural communities, air, water, climate, health, animal welfare, and family farms. This Tuesday, our lawmakers will have their first informational hearing on the Factory Farm Moratorium Bill. If passed, the bill would place a moratorium on any new or expanded factory farms. This would mean less human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, less air and water pollution from manure, and a healthier, more environmentally friendly Oregon. We need to show support for the Factory Farm Moratorium Bill now. [[link removed]]
Factory farm facilities concentrate large numbers of animals in confined spaces. Oregon’s 11 mega-dairies alone produce a staggering amount of manure: in 2019, it was over 6.5 billion pounds. This leads to a huge amount of greenhouse gas emissions, producing the equivalent emissions of 318,000 cars every year.
The large quantities of manure that mega-dairies and other factory farms produce also contaminate our drinking water, as harmful substances from manure make their way into our groundwater systems. Some of the largest factory farms in Oregon today are located in rural Latinx and Hispanic communities, meaning these communities are disproportionately suffering the negative impacts. We need a “time out” on more factory farms until Oregon acts to protect its water, climate, communities, and special places. [[link removed]]
Oregon is becoming a target for factory farms, harming our ground water resources, undermining our climate goals, and polluting our beautiful state. As Oregonians, we want to address climate change; and we want clean air and water for our families, neighbors, and future generations. We can't let a handful of corporations threaten all of this by building massive factory farms in our state.
