What was the moment you decided to do something about this?

For me, it was while reading Animal Liberation in an ethics class in college. I asked myself a simple question—do we have the right to subject animals to this suffering? Only one resounding answer came to mind: No.

As I sat in the library, the book open on my lap, the thought of one animal in our food system—her unique personality, her connection with her babies, and the horrors she faces—sent a wave of compassion washing over me. As a dedicated changemaker, I know you’ve felt that compassion too.

That moment was the beginning of a journey for me—leading me to dedicate my life to correcting the injustices that humans inflict on non-human animals. For years, I worked in the wildlife protection movement, where we won one policy victory after another. A nationwide ban on shark fin sales in Canada. A ban on the trophy hunting of bears in British Columbia.

I realized that many of the most important protections for animals can—and must—be won through policy change.

It became clear to me that to break down the biggest hurdles to a more compassionate world, we need better laws to protect animals. Especially farmed animals, who suffer the worst abuses in the largest numbers. So I went to law school, and then on to a Policy Fellowship with the Harvard Animal Law & Policy Program. For months, my co-fellow and I interviewed experts about their challenges in policy work for farmed animals.

We're up against a truly formidable opponent. The factory farming industry wields tremendous power over policy makers at all levels of government. And to fight back, we need to unite across organizations, across movements, across the country.

Enter: The Animal Policy Alliance (APA).

At The Humane League, our new Animal Policy Alliance (APA) is laser-focused on driving policy change in the US to protect farmed animals. Our team of legislative experts equips local and regional animal groups with the connections, research, and grants they need to create impactful legislation for animals, right in their own communities. Through monthly member calls and an annual APA summit, groups can build shared momentum and support each other in developing new strategies to protect animals. But this work—like everything else we do—can’t happen without the generosity of THL supporters like you.

At THL, monthly gifts provide the reliable funding we need to run all of our programs—from our policy work, to our corporate campaigns, to our grassroots advocacy. When you sign up as a monthly donor, you’ll help us grow our team of experts, partner with allies across the movement, and tackle the biggest farming interests.

Fighting this injustice will take all of us. Are you in?

FUEL THE FIGHT [[link removed]]

Day in and day out, we’re empowering animal groups across the US to carry out hard-hitting campaigns: Pushing for bans on cruel animal products like foie gras and fur. Fighting back against harmful laws pushed by the factory farming industry. Encouraging governments to offer more plant-based options.

Because while the policy world is often the hardest place to achieve wins, it also offers the biggest levers of long-term change to protect animals—and build a legal foundation for justice—for decades to come.

Through all this shared wisdom and energy, our movement stands to gain more and more policy wins for farmed animals. With enough focus and dedication, we’ll evolve towards a society where policymakers at all levels of government stand up against the factory farming interests—and end the abuse of animals raised for food.

And when factory farming interests push back, we’ll have one thing to say to them:

See you in court.

For the animals,

Gabriel Wildgen
Director of Public Policy
