Anti-LGBTQ lawmakers are harming their most vulnerable constituents. Stop them >>
Hi
Friend of Trevor,
In 2022, states enacted a record number of anti-LGBTQ laws, which they’re on their way to breaking. In just the first two months of this year, lawmakers have pushed nearly 360 bills through their legislatures.
Some of these laws and bills deny LGBTQ young people access to life-saving, medically necessary, and gender-affirming health care. Others levy abuse allegations against parents who seek out that care for their children. And others kick transgender athletes off their school sports teams. All of them take a toll on the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ young people.
The wave of anti-trans state bills that we’re doing everything in our power to stop generally fall into two main categories:
1. Bills that bar transgender young people from receiving affirming medical care.
According to Trevor’s research, more than half of trans and nonbinary young people seriously considered suicide in the past year, with one in five attempting suicide. But suicide risk plummets when they receive appropriate health care.
2. Bills that ban young transgender athletes from participating in sports.
Our findings show that banning young transgender student-athletes from sports increases social isolation and stigma, which can damage their mental health. LGBTQ young people report feeling less depressed when they participate in sports than those who don’t.
In the months ahead, Trevor’s research and advocacy teams will testify before state legislatures, submit amicus (friend-of-the-court) briefs in lawsuits moving through the court system, and partner with local advocates to stop these bills from becoming law.
