Yesterday, the Senate Trial began in earnest, with debate about the structure of the trial’s process and procedures. Here are three key takeaways.
- Senator Chuck Schumer introduced several resolutions to subpoena the Trump administration for Ukraine documents, all of which were defeated. The votes were cast along party lines in each instance and indicate that Republicans are complicit in a cover-up. If these lawmakers thought President Trump truly had nothing to hide, they would have voted in favor of as much evidence as possible.
- Mitch McConnell caved and allowed one more day of testimony. Originally, the Senate Minority Leader was planning to condense the trial into two days for each side, with 12-hour blocks of testimony that would run into the early morning. Now, the trial has been stretched to 3 days with much more manageable timetables.
- Democrats and a few moderate Republicans were also able to have all evidence gathered from the House investigation submitted automatically in the record. McConnell initially planned to force a vote for every piece of information already established in the House to be put in the record. Now, old evidence will be admitted automatically.
Today, opening arguments are underway. The impeachment managers from the House of Representatives are presenting the case for removal. Most of these Representatives have significant courtroom experience; all of them stood and argued for democracy last night. A team of existing White House lawyers, Trump’s personal counsel, and outside lawyers will make the case against conviction. Many of these lawyers have displayed unwavering loyalty to the President and worked to hide his corruption from the public in the past. Just last night, Trump’s legal team filled the record with falsehoods to try and cover up the truth.
We need you to continue showing our Senators that we are paying attention and want them to call for new witnesses in this trial. Anything less is a cover-up.
