John,

This morning at schools across America, thousands of students showed up to
class woefully underprepared for the work in front of them. They're suffering
from learning loss caused by remote schooling during the pandemic.

But there's good news, Mike writes in a Wall Street Journal op-ed published
today: "we know how to overcome learning loss." Read Mike's WSJ opinion piece

The solution, Mike writes, is "Summer Boost," a program we launched last year
at New York City public charter schools for rising first through ninth graders,
and that we announced today we're expanding to seven new cities this year. In
2022, Summer Boost provided 16,383 students with in-person learning and
enrichment activities at 224 schools, in all five boroughs. "The response from
students and schools was resoundingly positive," Mike writes, "and the results
were encouraging."

In 2023, Summer Boost programs will be held in Baltimore, Birmingham,
Indianapolis, Memphis, Nashville, San Antonio, and Washington, D.C. — and will
continue in New York City. The expansion will potentially double the number of
students helped last year, all of whom will now have a chance to catch up for
the year ahead.

It's an important step toward addressing an urgent challenge. Students coping
with learning loss could ultimately miss out on a lifetime of opportunities,
creating setbacks for families, schools, communities, and — given the scale of
the challenge — our entire country.

America won't be able to put the pandemic behind us until we put the
challenge of learning loss front and center. Read and share Mike's op-ed to
help spread the word about the importance of confronting learning loss for kids
across the U.S.:

Advising Low-income, First-generation College Applicants
<[link removed]>

With data showing the power of "near-peer" college advising to help
high-performing, low-income students attend and graduate from top tier
colleges, last month we announced a refocusing of our CollegePoint advising
program and an expansion of our partnership with Matriculate. Beginning with
students graduating high school in 2023, CollegePoint will focus exclusively on
offering free advising for first-generation college students to enroll and
graduate from the nation's top colleges and universities. The expanded
partnership will allow CollegePoint near-peer counselors to advise as many as
4,000 graduating seniors by 2025. Bloomberg Philanthropies has committed $86
million to CollegePoint since its inception in 2014.

Helping NYC Public School Graduates Move On To College And Careers
<[link removed]>

To help New York City Public School students as they graduate high school and
navigate the college and career planning process, Bloomberg Philanthropies
provided $5.2 million to help City University of New York (CUNY) and NYC Public
Schools to launch the CUNY College & Career Advising Fellows. The program has
already placed 10 full-time, in-person advisers to serve graduating seniors in
10 NYC public high schools. By the 2024-2025 academic year, the program will
expand its reach with 40 advisers in 30 high schools, potentially helping
thousands of students as they prepare for higher education and successful
careers.

Facilitating College And Career Pathways For Underserved Students
<[link removed]>

Earlier this month Bloomberg Philanthropies supported Launch: Equitable and
Accelerated Pathways for All, a national career pathways initiative tackling
the challenge of too few learners — particularly Black and Latinx learners and
learners experiencing poverty — earning credentials of value, and too many who
enroll in postsecondary education not finishing and taking on hard-to-pay debt,
further perpetuating economic inequity.
