MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Hello John,

Today marks a year since the horrific Russian invasion of Ukraine.  Outright remembers all Ukrainians who have lost their lives and we stand firmly in solidarity with the Ukrainian LGBTIQ community during this difficult time.

For LGBTIQ people in Ukraine and those who have fled to surrounding countries, the challenges are daunting.  Despite unfathomable loss and hardship – from loss of home and livelihood to loss of loved ones and community – Ukraine’s LGBTIQ community has shown an unbreakable spirit and fierce determination to help one another.  But they need our continued support to make it through.

That's why Outright is asking for your help to raise $250,000 to support frontline LGBTIQ organizations providing lifesaving assistance to their communities.  Thanks to the Dropbox Foundation and an Anonymous donor, up to $125,000 in donations will be matched 1:1.

Your contribution today will directly support LGBTIQ-serving Ukrainian organizations like T-South, which manages a shelter for trans and non-binary refugees, and it's fiscal sponsor PROJECTOR NGO; and Gay Alliance Ukraine which provides shelter and essential humanitarian relief.

VItalii Matveev, Board of Directors Chair at PROJECTOR NGO, recently shared with Outright, “In connection with the deterioration of the socio-economic situation in the country related to full-scale Russian invasion, the number of employers and vacancies has significantly decreased, and in addition, discrimination in workplaces and employment has increased, in particular against the background of transphobia. Currently, many trans and non-binary people in Ukraine are deprived of the opportunity to receive any income, and in some cases even humanitarian aid, due to bureaucracy and problems with documents for transgender people.”

Anna Leonova, from Gay Alliance Ukraine shares, “When Outright started [the Ukraine Fund] it helped us a lot...We decided to concentrate on two problems: first is accommodation.…Second, we faced the problem of lack of food in Kyiv… [In] March we started receiving requests from mostly senior LGBT people and LGBT people with disabilities…and we got a letter from senior guy... that he even can't go out and buy some bread…[‘]I have no relatives, and I'm alone and I felt that I'm socially isolated[‘]…. The second we started (our work), we helped people meet their essential needs..." Gay Alliance Ukraine has served 1,700 people to date.

John, as this brutal war rages on, your generous contribution will provide LGBTIQ organizations like T-South, PROJECTOR NGO and Gay Alliance Ukraine with resources to help LGBTIQ people access safe and warm shelter, food and medical supplies, hygiene kits and clean clothing, psychological assistance, and transportation and relocation services, and to continue to demand equal rights and protections.

In solidarity, and with deep gratitude for your support,

Amie Bishop, MSW, MPH
