Dear
Reader,
What are FIRST THINGS’ ambitions in 2023?

In a recent letter to our nearly three thousand active supporters, I answer this question and outline what I see as our editorial priorities for this (now only somewhat) new year.

Next time, I hope to write to you as well. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to FIRST THINGS today to partner with us in realizing our bold ambitions for 2023 ([link removed]) . Below, I share a bit more of what I think 2023 holds for FIRST THINGS.

In my recent donor letter, I turned the question around: What should FIRST THINGS’ editorial priorities be for 2023?

Today, I ask you the same question. In my ten years as editor, I have frequently drawn inspiration and insight from readers like you.

I urge you to make your gift now and answer this question in the Comments field of our secure donation form ([link removed]) .

Since 1945, America’s liberal establishment has set the governing agenda. After the 1960s, this agenda-setting elite began to adopt increasingly aggressive cultural policies. Whatever one thinks of feminism or gay rights, one cannot dispute that these projects have become more and more extreme, to the point of embracing radical transgender ideology.

From the start, FIRST THINGS founder Richard John Neuhaus recognized that rejecting secularism is not enough. We need to speak religiously about public affairs. The “yes” of interesting, vital, and relevant interventions into political debates is far more powerful than any “no” of critique or refutation.

FIRST THINGS needs to provide a positive alternative to the increasingly radical and destructive liberal consensus. We need to set the agenda, not just in the moral sphere, but in economic and foreign policy as well.

Will you help FIRST THINGS articulate a positive, compelling alternative to the reigning liberal consensus? Give today to amplify the leading voice for thoughtful religious believers in the public square ([link removed]) .
