One year ago today, millions of Ukrainians began desperately seeking safety in basements, subway stations, across borders as the war escalated in Ukraine. This marked the beginning of a humanitarian crisis and the biggest mass displacement Europe has seen since World War II, which continues to this day.
Thousands of compassionate humanitarians just like you made it possible for the IRC to mobilize quickly to meet civilians' needs, both in Ukraine and beyond its borders, where millions fled as refugees. And today, I'm asking you to renew your support to fuel our ongoing efforts to help people recover and rebuild.
Last year, over 100,000 donors stepped up to power our immediate crisis response. This allowed us to meet thousands of refugees with immediate assistance at Ukraine's borders. Within the past year, we've distributed aid and provided life changing services in person and reached over 450,000 people within the country.
Tragically, the conflict in Ukraine continues to rage on, imperiling the lives of families remaining in Ukraine and prolonging the displacement and suffering of many others. In fact, we have seen an escalation in the fighting and attacks on civilian infrastructure, increasing demand for the IRC's urgently needed services.
Watching this crisis unfold over the past year has been difficult and, in many ways, familiar.
My parents were Jewish refugees who fled their homes in Belgium and Poland during World War II. The armed conflict in Ukraine is different in many ways than the violence my parents were fleeing — but the stories of fear, uncertainty, and incredible bravery over the past year are much the same.
As the son of refugees, I know how much your support means. That's why I'm asking for your help once again.
Right now, all gifts will be matched. That means you can make twice the impact for families in Ukraine and other crisis zones. Please make a gift today and help send 2X the aid that families need to recover and rebuild.
In addition to immediate needs like protection from the harsh winter and medical care, many people will need ongoing support to recover and rebuild their lives. The IRC is providing cash, health services, education, and safe healing spaces for people — especially children — whose lives have been thrown into chaos.
Supporters like you are an integral part of the IRC community, and we would not be able to respond to humanitarian crises without you. Please, help us make a real difference in the lives of families in Ukraine and elsewhere whose lives have been torn apart by conflict.
Please make a gift before our 2X match expires. Every gift helps us reach our $200,000 fundraising goal — and sends a message of hope to people living in crisis. Don't miss this chance to double your impact: [link removed]
Grateful for you,
— David
