“The only day I remember is February 24. I still live in February. It is the longest winter in my life.” - Oleksandra, a 17-year-old in Ukraine
On this exact day a year ago, children in Ukraine woke to shelling in their neighborhoods. Smoke and flames filled the air as an endless barrage of missile strikes rained down on their lives. War had escalated on every level.
Homes and schools were destroyed, family members went missing and lives were in danger. As the guns roared, millions packed their lives into bags and fled their homes.
In the face of crisis, UNICEF leapt into action. At the start of the war and in the months since, UNICEF has scaled response efforts to deliver critical relief and protect children.
Thanks to your support over the past year, UNICEF has provided access to primary health care to more than 5 million children and women, supplied safe water to more than 4.7 million people, delivered educational support to more than 1.9 million children, built safe spaces for children fleeing as refugees and rushed essential support to the children in crisis.
Because of your support, our community has achieved so much good for children.
Still, as war intensifies and children’s needs remain high, you can make a significant impact to help children.

Since the war escalated a year ago, 1,292 children have been killed or injured while millions have fled, been forced from their homes, separated from their families or put at risk of violence.
Continuing attacks on critical energy infrastructure have left almost every child in Ukraine – nearly 7 million children – without sustained access to electricity, heating and water, putting them at increased risk as winter weather worsens. At the same time, children who have been forced to flee are now far from home and the Ukrainian refugee crisis is occurring on a scale and speed not seen since World War II.
