"I remember this day, 24th of February," says Dr. Sasha Sholokov, a medical doctor with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). "I woke up at 6:30 a.m. because my house started to shake because of the shelling."
His home destroyed, Dr. Sholokov left Mariupol with his wife and two-year-old son. After making sure his family was safe abroad, he returned with MSF to help people who had found safety in southeastern Ukraine, closer to the Russian border.
"Now I have to create my new life," said Dr. Sholokov. "I have to think [about] what I will give for my son, for the future."
MSF is dedicated to delivering lifesaving medical care in Ukraine, even when the headlines have faded. The simple but devastating fact is that war is continuing, and in many cases, civilian attacks have been escalating in recent months.
Our teams are active across the country: providing rehabilitation to war-wounded people, delivering psychological first aid to people who’ve experienced trauma, and supporting Ukraine’s beleaguered health system.
This email was sent from the U.S. section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
