Support your local striker: Contribute to Local 689’s Loudoun County Transit Strike Fund
Saying that “We are nearing 50 days on strike and are in need of getting support to our members to help them stay out until they win,” ATU President John Costa is urging area labor supporters to support striking Loudoun County transit workers – members of ATU Local 689 -- by contributing to the Local 689 Loudoun County Transit Strike Fund. Fed up with a lack of progress in contract talks and unfair labor practices, over 140 Local 689-Washington, DC, members working for Loudoun County Transit contractor Keolis went on strike on January 11, in their fight for a fair and just contract. “Keolis has been delaying progress at the bargaining table by continuing to violate federal labor law at a staggering pace, with the National Labor Relations Board having found merit to at least 47 different Unfair Labor Practice Charges against Keolis,” reports Costa. Although Loudoun County is one of the richest counties in the United States, Loudoun County Transit is the lowest-paying transit agency in the region.

CHECKED OUT report: How DOES Collects and Then Ignores Evidence of Wage Theft
Tipped workers in DC are at high risk of wage theft, and DC government does not do enough to protect them. That’s according to a new report out from DC Jobs With Justice and ROC-DC, released yesterday. “DC will eliminate the two-tier wage system in 2027, but until then, much is needed to stop and prevent tipped workers from having their wages stolen,” says the report, written by Elizabeth Falcon and Margaret K. O'Hora. DC Jobs With Justice and Restaurant Opportunities Center- DC analyzed one year’s worth of employee wage and tipping information provided by the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) to determine whether employers are following the law and, if not, what DOES is doing about it. “Our analysis found that DOES regularly receives evidence that employers are breaking the law, but does not act to deter or punish these violations.” Read more here.

Labor organizer and civil rights activist Edgar Daniel Nixon died on February 25, 1987. While working as a Pullman porter, Nixon organized the Montgomery local of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and served as its president for many years. He was a key organizer of the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 and co-founder of the Montgomery Improvement Association. |
