On this day in 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decided a pivotal case that determined a woman’s constitutional right to safe, legal abortion. But ever since extreme factions of the GOP have been doing everything they can to overturn Roe v. Wade -- and today, they are closer than ever with Louisiana’s radical anti-abortion law currently being heard at the Supreme Court.
Sadly, Republicans like Steve Daines don’t stand with families in Montana and across the country. Instead, they have signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court, urging the justices to “reconsider” the precedent set by Roe v. Wade and potentially roll back our reproductive rights.
Let me be clear: all Americans have the right to safe, legal abortion. It isn’t simply a healthcare issue. It’s a matter of justice. Rolling back these protections especially impacts low-income, rural, and otherwise disadvantaged communities. And when I’m in the Senate, I’ll do everything I can to protect our fundamental rights from the GOP’s attacks.
Here in Montana, we have a proud history of supporting the right to privacy -- in fact, it’s enshrined in our state constitution. But Republicans like Steve Daines continue to push their radical, anti-choice agenda instead of standing up for our constitutional rights. This is another tone deaf move that is out of touch with the majority of Montanans -- and Americans.
When I’m working for you in the U.S. Senate, I will stand up and fight to ensure reproductive health care is safe and accessible for women and families across Montana and the country.
