Dear Friend,

On Tuesday, the Biden administration proposed a federal rule that would deny asylum for most people at the southern border who travel through a third country to get to the United States. This is an absolute disgrace.

The proposed rule, if put into place, will have mortal consequences for LGBTQ asylum seekers fleeing persecution at the southern border, due to the well-documented human rights abuses against LGBTQ people in many Latin American Countries. LGBTQ refugees frequently travel through these third “transit” countries where they experience ongoing violence, sexual assault, and death because of their identity. President Biden’s proposal will require LGBTQ people to apply for asylum in dangerous countries before seeking safety in the U.S.

We cannot let this rule move forward. That’s why Immigration Equality is preparing to pressure the administration to change the rule.

But we can’t do this alone. We need your support right now to fight the Biden administration from severely restricting access to asylum.

President Biden is essentially doubling down on the Trump administration’s anti-asylum policies that will most certainly cause many LGBTQ refugees to suffer persecution, torture, and even death. We have less than thirty days to convince Biden to change the rule before it becomes final. Make your voice heard by joining us in fighting back against this destructive policy!
