Hi John,

This week, I delivered a speech at Parliament that set out the next steps in our work to support New Zealanders following the recent severe weather. There’s a lot happening right now, so I wanted to make sure you heard the key parts.

This year has unleashed a series of extreme weather events unparalleled in New Zealand’s recent history, and I want to acknowledge the communities, families and businesses that have suffered enormous loss and hardship. My thoughts are with you, and our Government will continue to support you.

While the severe weather may not have directly affected every part of the country, its ongoing impact will be felt by us all. Just like with the Christchurch and Kaikōura earthquakes, Cyclone Gabrielle’s legacy will be with us for many years to come. But together, we will get through this.

My commitment to you is this: our Government will do what it takes. We will stand by New Zealanders as we recover and we will back communities as we rebuild.

We’ve already taken significant steps towards this. We’re providing an initial $50 million support package for businesses, farmers and growers. We’re also injecting an extra $250 million to help councils fix roads, get transport links back up and access into communities.

On top of this, we’re establishing a new cyclone recovery taskforce to make sure people on the ground have direct input into decision making. Grant Robertson has been appointed as the new Cyclone Recovery Minister, and I’m putting in place Ministers for each affected region who will work directly with councils on the local response.

These are just the first steps and there will be more financial support to come. I’ll be back in touch soon with another update. For now though, you can get further details here <[link removed]>.

Finally, I want to express my enormous gratitude to the brave men and women right across the country who have sacrificed so much in the service of their communities.

Our first responders, community organisations, local marae, volunteers and so many more have come to the assistance of others. In this time of great need, your dedication has been an absolute inspiration. Thank you.

Ngā mihi,

Chris
