We knew the new extreme-right, Netanyahu-led government in Israel would be a disaster for Israeli democracy, Palestinian freedoms and our hope for a better future.
Yet, it’s still been stunning to see how quickly they’ve moved to undermine Israel’s democratic safeguards and supercharge settlement growth in the West Bank. In just a few weeks, the Netanyahu government has:
- Advanced a plan to completely strip the independence of Israel’s Supreme Court.
- Moved forward plans to build thousands of new settlement units in occupied territory.
- Approved “legalization” of at least nine West Bank settlement outposts that were previously unauthorized by the Israeli government -- acts of de facto annexation.
Hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets in protest of the government’s anti-democratic legislation. Meanwhile, violence and conflict on the ground continue to escalate -- as this year so far has seen deadly terror attacks on Israelis and the highest monthly death toll for Palestinians in over a decade.
This is a full-blown crisis for Israeli democracy and the future of both peoples. Our elected officials in Washington need to speak out -- and stand up for our shared interests and democratic values.
