Dear John,
The Northern Ireland Protocol has proven to be one of the
most contentious parts of Brexit - despite Boris Johnson
assuring us all at the time that his 'oven-ready deal' meant the the
border would remain "absolutely unchanged".
Six years on and the UK Government has finally got around to
constructive conversations with our nearest and closest allies.
Negotiations are nearing a conclusion, with steps
being made to repair the pain that past and present Prime Ministers'
broken promises have inflicted on businesses and the people of
Northern Ireland.
I never wanted Brexit. The Tory in-fighting and
childish 'negotiating' tactics this Government has engaged in over the
past few years have really been the worst of all worlds. At last, the
prospect of a constructive agreement is a step in the right
direction.
But we must go further:
The progress being made shows what can be achieved by turning the
page on the past few years. Best for Britain is calling on
the Government to work towards removing even more post-Brexit
barriers between the UK and EU to help businesses and our economy to
grow and provide jobs and opportunities for people across these
isles.
Successful negotiations always involve compromise and while some
will focus on what has been given up rather than what has been gained,
we should all welcome the flexibility shown by both the EU and UK in
the interests of providing stability for the people of Northern
Ireland.
Please
sign our petition to ensure that this new, constructive approach
becomes the rule and not the exception.
Best wishes,
Naomi Smith
