Friend,

Every day we wait to take action to prevent gun violence puts people, including our kids, at risk. My thoughts are still with the students and families of Michigan State University who are experiencing unimaginable grief, trauma, and fear.

We need to pass laws that prevent further gun violence and keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people, plain and simple. Our kids are begging us to take action to keep them safe. Enough is enough.

We need to address this epidemic at the state and federal level, which is why I am proud to see members of the state legislature in Michigan working incredibly hard right now to pass state-level gun violence prevention laws.

Earlier this month, I introduced bipartisan legislation at the federal level to keep guns out of the hands of those under protection orders and convicted stalkers. This is just one example of action Congress can take to pass critically needed gun reform legislation.

The Strengthening Protections for Domestic Violence and Stalking Survivors Act would:

  • Prevent those convicted of certain stalking offenses from purchasing firearms
  • Clarify that abusive dating partners subject to specific court orders are treated the same as an abusive spouse
  • Update the definition of “dating relationship” to close the “boyfriend loophole”

Will you join me in signing this petition to show your support for the updated provisions and Strengthening Protections for Domestic Violence and Stalking Survivors Act? Add your name here.

Gun violence is personal to me. I know how it feels to live in a house with a man – my father – who should not have had access to a gun. I remember the fear my siblings and I felt as we hid from him in the closet. No child, spouse, or partner should have to experience the trauma my family did.

We need to protect victims of domestic violence and keep firearms out of the hands of violent perpetrators by closing this loophole. Add your name next to mine to support the Strengthening Protections for Domestic Violence and Stalking Survivors Act.

Thank you for taking action. I will continue to share further actions you can take as we work together to pass gun violence prevention laws to keep our communities safe.

Thank you,

– Debbie
