least
six
toxic
chemicals
were
released
in
the
derailment,
including
ethylhexyl,
vinyl
chloride,
and
butyl
acrylate
—
all
hazardous
if
inhaled.
*
Some
chemicals,
like
ethyhexyl,
can
remain
in
the
soil
for
years
to
come.
*
3,500
fish
have
been
killed
from
the
chemical
release.
*
Residents
are
still
reporting
odor
and
exposure
symptoms
like
headaches,
nausea,
and
vomiting
—
leaving
the
question
of
whether
or
not
the
air
is
safe
to
breathe
unanswered.
*
East
Palestine
residents
are
still
getting
mixed
messages
as
to
whether
or
not
their
water
is
safe
to
drink
after
chemicals
spilled
into
local
waterways.

This is a nightmare scenario. And because the cargo on the train wasn’t considered “high-hazardous material," Norfolk Southern wasn’t required to notify the state of the train’s contents. Now, the people of East Palestine are living in a “toxic soup” of hazardous chemicals.
